Keynote Speaker 1

John D.McDonald, P.E

John D. McDonald, P.E., is Smart Grid Business Development Leader for GE’s Grid Solutions business. He has 46 years of experience in the electric utility transmission and distribution industry.

He received his B.S.E.E. and M.S.E.E. degrees from Purdue University, and an M.B.A. degree from the University of California-Berkeley. He is a Life Fellow of IEEE (member for 49 years), and was awarded the IEEE Millennium Medal, the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Excellence in Power Distribution Engineering Award, the IEEE PES Substations Committee Distinguished Service Award, the IEEE PES Meritorious Service Award, the 2015 CIGRE Distinguished Member Award and the 2015 CIGRE USNC Attwood Associate Award. John is Past President of the IEEE PES, the VP for Technical Activities for the US National Committee (USNC) of CIGRE, the Past Chair of the IEEE PES Substations Committee, and the IEEE Division VII Past Director.

He was on the Board of Governors of the IEEE-SA (Standards Association) and is an IEEE Foundation Director-Elect. John received the 2009 Outstanding Electrical and Computer Engineer Award from Purdue University. John teaches a Smart Grid course at the Georgia Institute of Technology, a Smart Grid course for GE, and Smart Grid courses for various IEEE PES local chapters as an IEEE PES Distinguished Lecturer. He has published one hundred fifty papers and articles, has co-authored five books and has one US patent.


Keynote Title : Grid Modernization - Technological Advancements Beyond Smart Grid

This talk will familiarize participants with a vision for Grid Modernization, focusing on technological advancements beyond Smart Grid. The technological advancements include discussions of key industry/societal trends, Smart Grid concepts, holistic solutions, integration of microgrids and distributed generation, and ADMS software applications. The talk will also cover feeder automation business models, managing different types of data, big data, analytics, enterprise data management, Smart Grid standards and interoperability, and Smart Grid deployments and lessons learned.

Ir. Dr. Mohd Fadzil Mohd Siam

Dr Fadzil graduated with a first class degree from University of Southampton in the field of Electrical Engineering. He obtained his PhD in 1998 from Heriot-watt University, Edinburgh and MBA from UNITEN-Melbourne Business School in 2018. He has been working with TNB undertaking various technical and leadership tasks.

He was previously the Managing Director of TNB Research and currently the Head (Corporate Strategy & Sustainability), Strategy & Regulatory Division, TNB. He has been involved in a various research areas including smart city/grid issues, power quality, energy storage, power system & network efficiency and renewable energy.

He is a registered professional engineer with Board Engineers Malaysia and Institute of Engineers Malaysia. He contributes in various national standard development committees, professional technical committees and working groups. He is appointed as Adjunct Professor at University Tenaga Nasional. He is currently the Chairman for Technical Working Group on Smart City under AESIEAP (Association of Electricity Supply Industry of East Asia and the Western Pacific). He is also a committee member of CIRED Malaysia.

The energy industry is experiencing rapid pace of innovation and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is optimising this opportunity to shape the future of the sector. It has embarked on Reimagining TNB strategic plan to enhance its business strategy and practices towards sustainable development across the business value chain. This shift has been driven in part by technology disruptions, economic shifts, evolving sustainability and regulatory requirements as well as increasing customer expectations. The COVID-19 pandemic impact is broadening the concern to the business continuity risk and productivity resilience challenge. The pandemic has worked as catalyst for digital transformation among utility industry with disruptive forces are compelling utility providers to change their traditional business models and create an imperative to act promptly and decisively. In this session, the speaker will share some of the initiatives undertaken by TNB to address the pandemic impact and how TNB Digital aspirations contribute a big role to accelerate the Reimagining TNB journey and beyond.
